Episode 57: When Do We Push, and When Do We Listen? Raising Kids Who Trust Themselves with Gosia
As parents, how do we know when our child needs a little encouragement to keep going... and when they're trying to tell us that something truly isn't right? Today's guest, Gosia, has had to navigate that question many times while raising a high-level young athlete. Her son's journey began in competitive gymnastics and eventually led him into elite diving, with some very big dreams for his future. But what fascinated me most about Gosia's story wasn't his athletic success. It was how she learned to listen. When her son suddenly began crying before gymnastics practice, Gosia initially encouraged him to keep going. But after three days, something felt different. She realized this wasn't simply discomfort he needed to push through. He was telling her something. And listening changed the direction of his life. How to tell the difference between encouraging perseverance and knowing when it's time to listen. Why our own hopes for our children can sometimes make it harder to hear what they're actually telling us. Helping kids develop confidence while still respecting their bodies and their limits. Navigating injuries and learning that rest doesn't always mean doing nothing. Why raising a high-level athlete truly takes a team. Making unconventional decisions when the traditional path no longer fits. And the importance of giving our children a voice in decisions that affect their lives. So many of the women I work with are learning, sometimes for the first time, to ask: What does my body need? Does this actually feel right for me? Is this discomfort I can move through, or is my body asking me to stop? Do I actually want this? Listening to Gosia made me wonder: What if we helped our children develop that inner trust from the beginning? Maybe one of the greatest gifts we can give our kids isn't making every decision for them. It's helping them recognize that their voice, their body, and their inner knowing are worth listening to.
