About Jim Jordan

James Daniel Jordan, born on February 17, 1964, is an American politician serving as the representative for Ohio's 4th congressional district since 2007. He is a member of the Republican Party and is currently in his 10th term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Before his political career, Jordan was a two-time NCAA national champion wrestler and a former college wrestling coach. In Congress, he played a key role in founding the House Freedom Caucus, serving as its first chair from 2015 to 2017 and as its vice chair since 2017. He was also the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee from 2019 to 2020 before becoming the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, a position he assumed in 2023 when he became its chair. Jordan is noted for his alignment with far-right political views and is considered a close ally of President Donald Trump. During Trump's presidency, he worked to discredit investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and staged a sit-in to prevent a Trump impeachment inquiry hearing over the Trump–Zelenskyy telephone controversy. After the 2020 presidential election, which Joe Biden won, Jordan supported lawsuits challenging the results and refused to certify the Electoral College vote. He also refused to cooperate with the House Select Committee investigating the January 6 attack. Politically, he opposed Kevin McCarthy's bid to succeed John Boehner as speaker in 2015 but later became one of McCarthy's closest allies. Following McCarthy's removal as speaker, Jordan sought the position himself but was ultimately unsuccessful in three rounds of voting.
