Lee Michael Zeldin, born January 30, 1980, is an American politician and lawyer who has been serving as the 17th administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency since January 2025. Prior to his appointment, he served in the United States House of Representatives representing New York's 1st congressional district from 2015 to 2023. He also served in the New York State Senate, representing the 3rd Senate district from 2011 to 2014. Zeldin is a member of the Republican Party and has been identified as a close ally of former President Donald Trump, notably defending Trump during his first impeachment. In 2022, Zeldin was the Republican nominee for Governor of New York. Although he did not win the election, losing to incumbent governor Kathy Hochul, his performance was regarded as the strongest for a Republican in a New York gubernatorial race since 2002 and the closest since 1994. His campaign results were credited with strengthening Republican positions in several competitive House districts, and analysts noted that his strong showing contributed to flipping four congressional seats to the Republican side, aiding the party's narrow majority in the House. As EPA administrator, Zeldin has been involved in proposing significant deregulation measures at the agency as part of the second Trump administration.
