The Dalai Lama is the head of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism and is regarded as a symbol of Tibetan unity and spiritual authority. The full title, Holiness Knowing Everything Vajradhara Dalai Lama, was given by Altan Khan in recognition of the then-leader of the Gelug tradition, Sonam Gyatso, and has been bestowed upon subsequent tulkus since the 16th century.
