About Desmond Tutu

Desmond Mpilo Tutu was a South African Anglican bishop and theologian recognized for his anti-apartheid and human rights activism. He served as Bishop of Johannesburg from 1985 to 1986 and as Archbishop of Cape Town from 1986 to 1996, being the first Black African to hold these positions. Tutu sought to combine ideas from Black theology and African theology, emphasizing a values-based approach to leadership and social justice. Born on October 7, 1931, in Klerksdorp to a family of mixed Xhosa and Motswana heritage, he was raised in poverty. After training as a teacher and marriage to Nomalizo Leah Shenxane, he was ordained as an Anglican priest in 1960. His theological education took him to King's College London, and he later taught at various theological institutions in southern Africa. Tutu was an outspoken opponent of South Africa's apartheid system, advocating non-violent protest and international pressure to achieve racial equality. He held numerous leadership roles, including general-secretary of the South African Council of Churches and president of the All Africa Conference of Churches. His efforts contributed significantly to the negotiations ending apartheid and establishing a multiracial democracy, with Nelson Mandela playing a central role. Tutu was appointed to chair the Truth and Reconciliation Commission following the 1994 elections. Beyond his political work, he was an advocate for gay rights, a critic of certain South African leaders, and vocal on issues such as the Iraq War and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and other international honors for his work.
