About Nelson Mandela

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist, statesman, and revolutionary who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country's first Black head of state elected in a fully representative democratic election. Mandela's administration aimed to dismantle the legacy of apartheid through racial reconciliation, a national peace accord, and the establishment of a multiracial democracy. An African nationalist and socialist, he also served as the president of the African National Congress from 1991 to 1997.

Born into the Thembu royal family in Mvezo, South Africa, Mandela studied law at the University of Fort Hare and the University of Witwatersrand before working as a lawyer in Johannesburg. He became involved in anti-colonial and African nationalist politics by joining the ANC in 1943 and co-founding its Youth League in 1944. During the apartheid era, he was active in campaigns against racial segregation and was involved in several protests and political activities that led to multiple arrests. Influenced by Marxism, Mandela secretly joined the banned South African Communist Party, and in 1961 he co-founded the militant uMkhonto we Sizwe, which carried out sabotage campaigns against the apartheid government. After the Rivonia Trial, he was sentenced to life imprisonment for conspiring to overthrow the state and served 27 years in prison.

Following his release in 1990 amid domestic and international pressure, Mandela participated in negotiations to end apartheid. His efforts culminated in the 1994 multiracial elections in which he became president. During his presidency, he focused on promoting national unity, economic reform, land redistribution, and healthcare initiatives. He also contributed to international diplomacy, serving as a mediator and as secretary-general of the Non-Aligned Movement. Widely regarded as a global icon of peace, democracy, and social justice, Mandela received numerous honors including the Nobel Peace Prize and is remembered as the 'Father of the Nation' in South Africa.
