Curtis Anthony Sliwa, born on March 26, 1954, is an American politician, activist, and radio talk show host based in New York City. He is the founder and chief executive officer of the Guardian Angels, a nonprofit organization dedicated to crime prevention. Sliwa established the group in 1977 initially as 'The Magnificent 13,' to patrol the Bronx and the New York City Subway during a period of rising crime rates. The organization was re-founded in 1979 as the Guardian Angels and has since expanded to operate in fourteen countries across over 130 cities, focusing on crime prevention, self-defense training, youth mentoring, and outreach to the homeless. Sliwa has been active internationally and domestically, leading the organization for several decades. In addition to his activism, Sliwa has been a radio talk show host on various New York City stations, beginning in 1990 on WABC-AM. His broadcasts have often focused on current affairs from a conservative perspective, sometimes utilizing shock jock humor. Sliwa has been a prominent figure in New York politics, running twice as the Republican nominee for mayor of the city, in 2021 and 2025, both times unsuccessfully. He positions himself as a populist and outsider, emphasizing issues such as law and order, public safety, poverty, and homelessness, and he has expressed support for tax cuts. Sliwa has also engaged in protests and civil disobedience concerning crime and immigration issues, resulting in at least 75 arrests.
