Eric Leroy Adams, born on September 1, 1960, is an American politician and former police officer who served as the 111th mayor of New York City from 2022 to 2025. He previously served as Brooklyn Borough President and was a member of the Democratic Party. Adams spent over 20 years in law enforcement, working for the New York City Transit Police and the New York City Police Department, retiring at the rank of captain. He served in the New York State Senate from 2006 to 2013, representing the 20th district in Brooklyn, during which he was elected Brooklyn Borough President in 2013 and re-elected in 2017, becoming the first black American to hold that position. Adams secured the Democratic nomination for mayor in 2021 following a competitive primary involving ranked-choice voting, and won the general election in a landslide over Republican Curtis Sliwa. His tenure as mayor was characterized by a tough-on-crime approach, including the reintroduction of a plain-clothed NYPD unit and a zero-tolerance policy on homelessness related to subway sleeping. His administration faced federal investigations in 2024, resulting in federal charges against him, which he denied, claiming they were retaliation related to his opposition to the handling of the city's migrant crisis. The charges were dropped in 2025, and Adams subsequently announced his intent to seek re-election as an independent but withdrew in favor of endorsing Andrew Cuomo, who then lost the mayoral race.
