Andrew Mark Cuomo, born on December 6, 1957, is an American lawyer and politician. He served as the 56th governor of New York from 2011 until his resignation in 2021 amid allegations of sexual misconduct. A member of the Democratic Party and the son of former governor Mario Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo was raised in Queens. He graduated from Fordham University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and earned a Juris Doctor from Albany Law School. Cuomo began his career as campaign manager for his father during the 1982 New York gubernatorial election. He later practiced law privately and chaired the New York City Homeless Commission from 1990 to 1993. Under President Bill Clinton, Cuomo served in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development as assistant secretary from 1993 to 1997 and as secretary from 1997 to 2001. He was elected New York attorney general in 2006 and subsequently won the 2010 gubernatorial election with over 60 percent of the vote. During his tenure as governor, Cuomo signed legislation to legalize same-sex marriage and recreational cannabis, and his administration oversaw major infrastructure projects including the Second Avenue Subway, the Moynihan Train Hall, and the reconstruction of the Tappan Zee Bridge and LaGuardia Airport. His policies also included decommissioning the Indian Point nuclear plant, enacting strict gun control laws, expanding Medicaid, and gradually increasing the minimum wage to fifteen dollars per hour. Cuomo initially received praise for his response to the COVID-19 pandemic but later faced criticism and investigations related to nursing home policies and the handling of COVID-19 data. Starting in late 2020, he was accused of sexual misconduct, with an independent report in August 2021 concluding he had harassed at least eleven women. Following mounting calls for his resignation, Cuomo stepped down in August 2021. In 2025, he ran unsuccessfully for mayor of New York City after losing in the Democratic primary and in the general election.
