Alan Alda, born Alphonso Joseph D'Abruzzo on January 28, 1936, is an American actor and filmmaker whose career has spanned over seven decades. He is widely recognized for his portrayal of Captain Benjamin Franklin Hawkeye Pierce in the CBS wartime sitcom M*A*S*H, a role in which he also wrote and directed numerous episodes. Alda has received numerous awards including six Primetime Emmy Awards and six Golden Globe Awards. His nominations include an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, three Tony Awards, and two BAFTA Awards. In addition to his television accomplishments, Alda has appeared in several notable films such as Same Time, Next Year, California Suite, and The Seduction of Joe Tynan. He made his directorial debut with The Four Seasons in 1981 and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Owen Brewster in Martin Scorsese's The Aviator.
