About Rio Ferdinand

Rio Gavin Ferdinand, born on 7 November 1978, is an English former professional footballer recognized as one of England's greatest defenders. He played as a centre-back and had an illustrious career primarily with Manchester United, where he won six Premier League titles and fourteen trophies in total. Ferdinand began his football journey with various youth teams before establishing himself at West Ham United, making his Premier League debut in 1996. He earned his first senior England cap in 1997 against Cameroon, becoming the youngest defender at the time to represent England. His performances attracted interest from Leeds United, where he transferred for a British record fee of £18 million, and later to Manchester United for approximately £30 million. At Manchester United, he secured his first major club honor with a Premier League title in his initial season. His career was interrupted in 2003 when he missed a drugs test, resulting in an eight-month ban; despite this setback, he rebounded to become a regular fixture in the team, earning multiple spots in the PFA Team of the Year. Ferdinand also participated in three FIFA World Cup squads and was a member of Olympic and UEFA Champions League-winning teams. He retired from professional football in 2015 after a brief tenure with Queens Park Rangers. Beyond football, Ferdinand became a television pundit for TNT Sports and announced plans to pursue a career in boxing in 2017, partly motivated by personal reasons including coping with his wife’s death. He is related to former players Les Ferdinand and Kane Ferdinand, and his brother Anton Ferdinand also played professionally as a centre-back.
