Edward Christopher Sheeran, born on 17 February 1991, is an English singer-songwriter. He was born in Halifax, West Yorkshire, and raised in Framlingham, Suffolk. Sheeran began writing songs around the age of eleven. In early 2011, he independently released the extended play No.5 Collaborations Project and signed with Asylum Records later that year. His debut album, Plus, was released on 9 September 2011 and topped the UK Albums Chart, featuring his first hit single, The A Team. Sheeran's second album, Multiply, was released in June 2014 and topped charts worldwide. It was named the second-best-selling album globally in 2015 and won Album of the Year at the Brit Awards that year. The album also earned him the Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year. His single Thinking Out Loud from Multiply secured the Grammy Awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance in 2016. Sheeran's third album, Divide, was released in March 2017, becoming the best-selling album of 2017 worldwide. Its singles Shape of You and Castle on the Hill broke records internationally. He became the first artist to have two songs debut simultaneously in the US top 10. By March 2017, he had set records with ten top-10 singles from Divide on the UK Singles Chart. His subsequent albums, Equals, Subtract, Autumn Variations, and Play, have continued his success, with numerous chart-topping releases. Sheeran has sold approximately 200 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists. He was named the Official Charts Company artist of the decade in 2019, and as of July 2024, he is the third most-followed artist on Spotify. His acting includes appearances such as in the 2019 film Yesterday. In 2025, Time magazine listed him among the world's 100 most influential people.
