Nancy Patricia Pelosi, born on March 26, 1940, is an American politician known for being the 52nd speaker of the United States House of Representatives. She served in this role from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023. Pelosi was the first woman to hold the position of speaker and the first woman to lead a major political party in either chamber of Congress, leading the House Democrats from 2003 to 2023. She has served in the House of Representatives since 1987, representing California's 11th congressional district, which encompasses most of San Francisco. Pelosi is the dean of California's congressional delegation and has held the role of House party leader for a total of 20 years, tying with Joe Martin for the second-longest tenure after Sam Rayburn. The daughter of Representative Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., she was born and raised in Baltimore. After graduating from Trinity College in 1962 and marrying Paul Pelosi in 1963, she moved to New York City before settling in San Francisco. Pelosi's political career began in the 1960s as a volunteer for the Democratic Party and progressed through various roles, including chairing the state party before being elected to Congress in a special election in 1987.
