Bernie Sanders is an American politician serving as the senior United States senator from Vermont. He has held this position since 2007 and is the longest-serving independent in U.S. congressional history. Despite his independent status, Sanders has maintained a close relationship with the Democratic Party, caucusing with House and Senate Democrats for most of his congressional career. He has sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016 and 2020, finishing as the runner-up in both campaigns. A self-described democratic socialist, Sanders is regarded as one of the leaders of the American progressive movement in the 21st century. Born into a working-class Jewish family in New York City, he attended Brooklyn College and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1964. During his student years, he was involved in civil rights protests as an organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. After moving to Vermont in 1968, Sanders ran unsuccessful third-party campaigns in the 1970s and was elected mayor of Burlington in 1981, serving four terms. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1990, representing Vermont's at-large district, and was a founding member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. In 2006, Sanders was elected to the U.S. Senate and was reelected multiple times, serving as chair of several committees. As an advocate for progressive policies, he supports universal healthcare, tuition-free education, the Green New Deal, and workplace democracy. Sanders also opposes neoliberalism and authoritarianism while emphasizing diplomacy, labor rights, and environmental concerns in foreign policy.
