Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician and attorney who served as the 49th vice president of the United States from 2021 to 2025 under President Joe Biden. Of Indian and Jamaican parentage, she made history as the first female, first African American, and first Asian American vice president, becoming the highest-ranking female and Asian public official in U.S. history. Harris represented California in the United States Senate from 2017 to 2021 and served as the attorney general of California from 2011 to 2017. She was born in Oakland, California, and graduated from Howard University and the University of California, Hastings College of the Law. Harris began her legal career in the office of the district attorney of Alameda County and later worked for the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and the city attorney's office of San Francisco. She was elected district attorney of San Francisco in 2003 and attorney general of California in 2010, being reelected in 2014. As a senator, Harris advocated for gun control, the DREAM Act, federal cannabis legalization, and healthcare reforms. She gained a national profile through her questioning of officials during Senate hearings. Harris ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020 but withdrew before the primaries. She was selected as Joe Biden's running mate in 2020 and played a significant role in the Senate, casting 33 tie-breaking votes. Following Biden's withdrawal from the 2024 presidential race, Harris launched her own campaign, later becoming the Democratic nominee. Her ticket was ultimately defeated by the Republican nominees.
