Marcus Aurelius: podcast appearances and interviews
Roman emperor and philosopher
About Marcus Aurelius
Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was a Roman emperor from 161 to 180 and a Stoic philosopher. He was a member of the Nerva–Antonine dynasty and is recognized as the last of the Five Good Emperors. His reign marked the end of the Pax Romana, a period of peace and stability for the Roman Empire. Marcus was the son of the praetor Marcus Annius Verus and his wife Domitia Calvilla. After his father's death when he was three years old, he was raised by his mother and paternal grandfather. His familial connections linked him to previous emperors through marriage, and following Hadrian's death in 138, Marcus was adopted by Antoninus Pius, who became emperor. During his rule, Marcus Aurelius fought in various military campaigns, including conflicts with the Parthian Empire and various Germanic tribes such as the Marcomanni, Quadi, and Iazyges. His reign also saw increased persecution of Christians and the outbreak of the Antonine Plague, which caused extensive death across the empire. Despite military and health crises, he maintained his philosophical pursuits, and his writings, notably Meditations, are regarded as essential sources on Stoic philosophy. Marcus Aurelius's leadership ended with his death in 180, after which his son Commodus succeeded him. His legacy persists through monuments such as the column and equestrian statue in Rome, commemorating his military victories. As a philosopher, his work continues to influence modern understanding of Stoic philosophy, earning admiration from subsequent generations.
