About Marie Curie

Marie Curie was a Polish and naturalised-French physicist and chemist known for her pioneering research on radioactivity. She shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband, Pierre Curie, for their joint investigations into radioactivity phenomena discovered by Henri Becquerel. In 1911, she received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discovery of the elements radium and polonium, as well as her work on isolating radium and studying its compounds. She was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize, the first person to earn two in different scientific fields, and the only individual to achieve this distinction. She and Pierre Curie were the first married couple to win Nobel Prizes, establishing a family legacy in the sciences with five awards in total. Curie was born in Warsaw, where she studied at the clandestine Flying University before moving to Paris in 1891. There, she completed her higher education and conducted her scientific work, culminating in groundbreaking research on radioactivity, a term she coined. Her contributions extended beyond research; she worked on the medical application of radioactive isotopes and developed mobile radiography units during World War I. Curie founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw, which continue to serve as major medical research centers. She was also the first woman to become a professor at the University of Paris. Curie died in 1934 from aplastic anaemia likely caused by radiation exposure during her research and wartime medical work. She was honored with numerous awards and recognitions, and her legacy endures through her scientific discoveries and the recognition of her contributions to science and medicine.
