Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist recognized for his foundational contributions to evolutionary biology. He proposed that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor and developed the theory of natural selection, which explains the branching pattern of evolution resulting from organisms competing for resources. Darwin is considered one of the most influential figures in human history and was honored by burial in Westminster Abbey. His early interest in natural sciences was evident during his studies at the University of Edinburgh and Cambridge's Christ's College. His five-year voyage on HMS Beagle from 1831 to 1836 played a significant role in establishing his reputation as a geologist and naturalist; the observations and theories he developed during this expedition supported geological change over time. Darwin’s publication of his journal from the voyage gained widespread popularity. His first scientific work, The Structure and Distribution of Coral Reefs, awarded him the Royal Medal in 1853, marked the beginning of his contributions to natural science. In 1838, he formulated his theory of natural selection after investigating the geographical distribution of wildlife and fossils. Although he discussed his ideas with other naturalists, he took additional time for extensive research, and in 1858, he jointly presented his theory with Alfred Russel Wallace to the Linnean Society. Darwin's most notable work, On the Origin of Species, published in 1859, provided compelling evidence for evolution. His subsequent publications explored related themes such as coevolution, human evolution, sexual selection, and psychology, further advancing scientific understanding across multiple disciplines.
