Julius Henry Marx, known as Groucho Marx, was an American comedian, actor, comic vocalist, and game show host born on October 2, 1890. He performed across various entertainment mediums including vaudeville, Broadway, films, radio, and television. Marx was recognized for his mastery of the one-line retort and is regarded as one of America's greatest comedians. As the third born of the Marx Brothers, he appeared in three Broadway shows and thirteen feature films with his brothers Chico and Harpo, often playing a fast-talking, slightly shady protagonist who served as a foil to his siblings' antics. In addition to his work with the Marx Brothers, Marx enjoyed a successful solo career, particularly on radio and television, most notably as the host of the quiz and interview show You Bet Your Life. His distinctive appearance, a hallmark from his vaudeville days, included an exaggerated stooped posture, spectacles, a cigar, and a thick greasepaint moustache and eyebrows, the latter later becoming real.
