About Orson Welles

George Orson Welles was an American actor and filmmaker known for his innovative work across film, radio, and theatre. He gained international fame as the director and narrator of a radio adaptation of H. G. Wells's The War of the Worlds, which caused some listeners to believe in an actual Martian invasion. Welles was also a founder of the Mercury Theatre, an independent repertory company that produced notable Broadway shows starting with a 1937 adaptation of Macbeth with an African-American cast and ending with Richard Wright's Native Son. His career in film is highlighted by the release of Citizen Kane in 1941, which he co-wrote, produced, directed, and starred in as Charles Foster Kane. Citizen Kane is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Welles directed twelve other features, including The Magnificent Ambersons, Othello, Touch of Evil, The Trial, and Chimes at Midnight. His distinctive directorial style employed layered narratives, dramatic lighting, unconventional camera angles, radio-inspired sound techniques, deep focus shots, and long takes. Throughout his career, Welles faced challenges in maintaining creative control within the studio system and often struggled to secure financing for independent projects. In addition to directing, he acted in numerous films such as Jane Eyre, The Third Man, and A Man for All Seasons. Recognized as a highly influential auteur, Welles received many awards, including an Academy Award, three Grammy Awards, the Golden Lion, the Palme D'Or, an Honorary Oscar, and honors from the AFI and British Film Institute. British Film Institute polls named him the greatest film director ever, and he is regarded as one of the greatest Hollywood actors of all time.
