About Lucille Ball
Lucille Désirée Ball (August 6, 1911 – April 26, 1989) was an American comedian, actress, producer, and studio executive. Recognized by Time in 2020 as one of the most influential women of the 20th century, she made significant contributions across multiple entertainment fields. Her career began in 1929 as a model, and she subsequently performed on Broadway under the stage name Diane Belmont. In the 1930s and 1940s, Ball appeared in films as a contract player for RKO Radio Pictures, often cast in supporting roles or as a chorus girl, with some leading roles in B-pictures. She met Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz during this period and married him in 1940. In the 1950s, she transitioned into television and co-created the sitcom I Love Lucy. The show was a significant success, and she and Arnaz had two children. Following her divorce from Arnaz in 1960, she married comedian Gary Morton in 1961. Ball produced and starred in the Broadway musical Wildcat and in 1962 became the first woman to run a major television studio, Desilu Productions. Under her leadership, the studio produced notable series such as Mission: Impossible and Star Trek. She continued acting in television series including The Lucy Show and Here's Lucy, which ran until 1974. In her later years, she took on a dramatic role in the television film Stone Pillow and starred in Life with Lucy. She passed away at age 77 from an abdominal aortic aneurysm linked to arteriosclerotic heart disease. Posthumously, her legacy was honored through various awards and recognitions, and the American Comedy Awards were named after her.
