About Oscar Wilde
Oscar Fingal O'Fflahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish author, poet, and playwright known for his influence on late 19th century literature and culture. He was a key figure in the aestheticism movement and is widely regarded as the greatest playwright of the Victorian era. Wilde's work includes the Gothic novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, his epigrams, plays, and bedtime stories for children. Born to Anglo-Irish intellectuals in Dublin, he became proficient in French and German during his youth and excelled academically in classics at Trinity College Dublin and Magdalen College, Oxford. Wilde was associated with the emerging philosophy of aestheticism, influenced by his tutors Walter Pater and John Ruskin. Moving to London after university, he engaged in various literary activities, including playwriting, poetry, lecturing, and reviewing, which established him as a public personality recognized for his wit, flamboyance, and conversational skill. During the early 1890s, Wilde refined his views on the supremacy of art through dialogues and essays. His notable works from this period include four successful society comedies and the novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. Wilde also authored the French play Salome and had significant social and legal conflicts related to his sexuality. In 1895, he was prosecuted and convicted for gross indecency, leading to a two-year imprisonment. During his incarceration, he wrote De Profundis, and upon release, he moved to France, where he authored The Ballad of Reading Gaol. Wilde's life and work continue to be influential and widely studied.
