About Waylon Jennings

Waylon Arnold Jennings was an American country music singer, songwriter, musician, and actor known as a pioneer of the outlaw movement in country music. He began playing guitar at the age of eight and performed publicly by age fourteen on KVOW radio. After leaving high school at sixteen to pursue a musical career, Jennings worked as a performer and DJ on several radio stations including KVOW, KDAV, KYTI, and KLLL. His first recording session was arranged by Buddy Holly in 1958, during which he played bass on a cover of Jole Blon. Jennings was connected to Holly's ill-fated flight but gave up his seat on that plane. Following this, he returned to Texas and later moved to Arizona, forming a rockabilly band called the Waylors. Jennings recorded for independent labels before signing with RCA Victor in 1965, where he gained success and artistic control. In the 1970s, Jennings became a leading figure in outlaw country, recording acclaimed albums such as Lonesome, On'ry and Mean and Honky Tonk Heroes. He was part of the chart-topping album Wanted! The Outlaws with Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and Jessi Colter, and he achieved the first platinum album for a solo country artist with Ol' Waylon. Jennings also appeared in films and television, including as a narrator and theme song singer for The Dukes of Hazzard. Overcoming cocaine addiction in 1984, he joined the supergroup The Highwaymen with Nelson, Kristofferson, and Cash and released several albums, including Will the Wolf Survive. Inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001, Jennings is recognized as an innovator of progressive country and a significant influence within the genre.
