Willie Hugh Nelson, born on April 29, 1933, is an American singer, guitarist, songwriter, actor, and activist. He played a prominent role in the outlaw country subgenre that emerged in the late 1960s as a reaction to the conservative restrictions of the Nashville sound. Nelson achieved critical and commercial success with albums such as Shotgun Willie in 1973, Red Headed Stranger in 1975, and Stardust in 1978, establishing himself as a leading figure in country music. Throughout his career, he has also acted in over 30 films and co-authored several books. Nelson began writing songs at the age of seven and joined his first band at ten, developing his musical career in Texas, the Pacific Northwest, and Nashville. He moved to Nashville in 1960, signed a publishing contract with Pamper Music, and joined Ray Price's band as a bassist. His early songwriting includes country standards like Funny How Time Slips Away and Crazy. In the 1970s, Nelson shifted toward the outlaw country movement after growing weary of the Nashville scene; he recorded influential albums with Atlantic and Columbia Records and joined the supergroup The Highwaymen. He participated in notable events such as Farm Aid and continued to release music and tour extensively through the 1990s and 2000s, exploring genres beyond country, including reggae, blues, jazz, and folk. Nelson has also appeared in films and television and is known for his activism in areas such as marijuana legalization and environmental sustainability, owning Willie Nelson Biodiesel and serving as a co-chair of NORML.
