Johnny Cash: podcast appearances and interviews
About Johnny Cash
Johnny Cash was an American singer-songwriter known for his deep, calm bass-baritone voice and his distinctive sound characterized by train-like guitar rhythms played by his backing band, the Tennessee Three. Born to poor cotton farmers in Kingsland, Arkansas, he grew up immersed in gospel music and performed on a local radio station during high school. After serving four years in the Air Force, much of it in West Germany, Cash rose to fame in the mid-1950s within the Memphis rockabilly scene. He often opened his concerts with the phrase Hello, I am Johnny Cash, and his repertoire included signature songs such as Folsom Prison Blues, I Walk the Line, Ring of Fire, and Man in Black. His music spanned various genres including country, rock and roll, rockabilly, blues, folk, and gospel, making him one of the best-selling artists of all time with over 90 million records sold worldwide. Cash was known for his themes of sorrow, moral tribulation, and redemption, especially in his later years. He also recorded humorous pieces like One Piece at a Time and A Boy Named Sue, and collaborated with his wife June on duets such as Jackson. In his final years, Cash covered songs by contemporary rock artists, including Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, Rusty Cage by Soundgarden, and Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode. His life and career were dramatized in the 2005 biopic Walk the Line. He was inducted into the Country, Rock and Roll, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame.
