Vivek Hallegere Murthy is an American physician and a former vice admiral in the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. He served as the 19th and 21st surgeon general of the United States, with terms from 2015 to 2017 and again from 2021 to 2025, under Presidents Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden. Murthy is notable for being the first surgeon general of Indian descent and, during his first term, was the youngest active duty flag officer in federal uniformed service. He played a key role in public health initiatives during his tenure. Murthy co-chaired President-elect Biden's COVID-19 Advisory Board from November 2020 to January 2021, alongside David A. Kessler and Marcella Nunez-Smith, contributing to the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Biden announced Murthy's return to the role of U.S. surgeon general on December 7, 2020, and he was confirmed by the Senate on March 23, 2021, with a vote of 57–43.
