He attained widespread acclaim with Breakfast at Tiffany's in 1958, a novella centered on a fictional New York socialite named Holly Golightly. His most notable work, In Cold Blood, published in 1966, was a true crime account of the murder of a Kansas farm family, a project he spent six years researching with the assistance of his lifelong friend Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird.
