Adeline Virginia Woolf was an English writer recognized as one of the most influential authors of 20th-century modernism. She is known for pioneering the use of stream of consciousness narration as a literary device. Woolf was born in South Kensington, London, into an affluent and intellectual family as the seventh child of Julia Prinsep Jackson and Leslie Stephen. She grew up in a household with a total of eight children, including her sister, the painter Vanessa Bell. Her education included home schooling in English classics and Victorian literature, followed by studies at King's College London where she focused on classics and history. Her early academic environment exposed her to advocates for women's rights and education. Following her father's death in 1904, Woolf and her siblings moved to Bloomsbury, a bohemian district where she became a founding member of the Bloomsbury Group, an influential circle of writers and artists. In 1912, she married Leonard Woolf, with whom she established the Hogarth Press in 1917, a publishing house that released much of her work. Woolf's professional publishing career began in 1904 and gained prominence during the interwar period through notable novels such as Mrs Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and Orlando. She also authored the feminist essay A Room of One's Own in 1929. Her work has had a lasting impact on literature and feminist criticism and remains widely translated and studied. Woolf’s legacy continues through scholarship, cultural portrayals, and various memorials.
