Scott Raymond Adams was an American cartoonist, author, and commentator, best known for creating the Dilbert comic strip and writing numerous nonfiction works focused on business, self-improvement, commentary, and satire. He transitioned to full-time cartooning in 1995 after working in various corporate roles and gained national prominence in the United States with the debut of Dilbert in 1989. The comic quickly expanded its reach worldwide and remained popular over several decades, leading to the publication of multiple books authored by Adams. Beyond his work in comics, Adams authored works in diverse fields, including the pandeistic spiritual novella God's Debris and titles on political and management topics such as Loserthink. In the mid-2010s, he became a notable independent commentator on social and political issues. In 2023, Adams faced controversy following racist comments made on his YouTube channel, which he claimed were meant as hyperbole; subsequently, Dilbert was dropped by numerous newspapers and its distributor. He continued the comic as a webcomic on his Locals website and remained active on social media. Adams announced his retirement from drawing in 2025 after being diagnosed with prostate cancer, but he stated he would continue writing Dilbert as long as his health permitted. He passed away on January 13, 2026, at the age of 68.
