Roger Stokoe Goodell, born on February 19, 1959, is an American businessman who has served as the commissioner of the National Football League since 2006. He began his NFL career in 1982 as an administrative intern in the league office in New York, a position he obtained through a letter-writing campaign to the league office and its teams. In 1983, Goodell worked as an intern with the New York Jets before returning to the NFL office in 1984 as an assistant in the public relations department. He was appointed assistant to the president of the American Football Conference in 1987 and held various roles in football and business operations under then-Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Goodell was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer in December 2001, overseeing football operations, officiating, and league business functions, including media properties, marketing, stadium development, and strategic planning as head of NFL Ventures. During his tenure, Goodell participated in negotiations for the 2011 collective bargaining agreement with the NFL Players Association and NFL owners. He also contributed to league expansion, realignment, and stadium development, and was involved in launching the NFL Network and securing new television agreements.
