Drew Christopher Brees, born January 15, 1979, is an American former professional football quarterback who played in the National Football League for 20 seasons. He was primarily associated with the New Orleans Saints, a franchise he joined after initially playing for the San Diego Chargers. Brees is recognized as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time due to his statistical achievements and record-breaking performances. He holds the NFL records for consecutive games with a touchdown pass, surpassing Johnny Unitas's 52-year-old record. Over his career, Brees ranked second all-time in career passing yards, career touchdown passes, and career pass completions, and third in career completion percentage. During his college tenure with the Purdue Boilermakers, he earned the Maxwell Award and was named Big Ten Most Valuable Player in 2000; he also set Big Ten Conference records for completions, attempts, and yards. Despite concerns about his height and arm strength, he was drafted in the second round of the 2001 NFL Draft by the San Diego Chargers. His breakout season came in 2004, leading the Chargers to their first playoff appearance since 1995 and their first division title since 1994, earning Pro Bowl and Comeback Player of the Year honors. After an injury in 2005, Brees left the Chargers and joined the New Orleans Saints, transforming the franchise into a successful team with multiple division titles and playoff appearances. In 2009, he led the Saints to their first Super Bowl victory and was named Super Bowl MVP. Brees retired after the 2020 season; he later worked as an analyst and served as an interim assistant coach at Purdue. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2026.
