Robin D. G. Kelley is a distinguished American historian and academic serving as the Gary B. Nash Endowed Chair in U.S. History at the University of California, Los Angeles. His academic career has included positions at several universities, such as the University of Southern California where he was a Professor of American Studies and Ethnicity from 2006 to 2011, Columbia University where he held the William B. Ransford Professor of Cultural and Historical Studies from 2003 to 2006, and New York University where he was a Professor of History and Africana Studies from 1994 to 2003 and served as chair of the history department from 2002 to 2003. Kelley's career has also encompassed roles as a Hess Scholar-in-Residence at Brooklyn College and a Montgomery Fellow at Dartmouth College, during which he wrote significant portions of his book titled Freedom Dreams. During the 2009–10 academic year, he served as the Harold Vyvyan Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University, becoming the first African-American historian to hold this position since its inception in 1922. In recognition of his work, Kelley was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014. He is the author of a biography of Thelonious Monk published in 2009. Kelley describes himself as a Marxist Surrealist feminist, reflecting his critical and ideological perspectives within his scholarly pursuits.
