About Peter Dunne
Peter Francis Dunne, born on 17 March 1954, is a retired New Zealand politician and political commentator. He served as the Member of Parliament for the Ōhāriu electorate and its predecessors from 1984 until 2017. During his parliamentary career, Dunne was initially a member of the Labour Party from 1984 to 1994 before leading or joining several minor centrist parties. He was the Leader of Future New Zealand from 1994 to 1995, United New Zealand from 1996 to 2000, and United Future from 2000 to 2017. Throughout his time in Parliament, Dunne was appointed to ministerial positions four times, serving in governments led by both the National and Labour parties. His ministerial roles included Minister of Regional Development, Minister of Revenue, and Minister of Internal Affairs. For most of the period from 1996 onwards, except for two terms from 2002 to 2008, Dunne was the sole representative of his party in Parliament. Despite contesting elections after his departure, his party received only 0.1% of the vote and failed to secure seats. Since retiring from politics, Dunne has been active as a political commentator, participating in discussions and analysis related to New Zealand politics.
