About Peter Cushing

Peter Wilton Cushing was an English actor whose career spanned over six decades, during which he appeared in more than 100 films as well as numerous television, stage, and radio roles. Born in Kenley, Surrey, in 1913, he made his stage debut in 1935 and spent three years in repertory theatre before moving to Hollywood to pursue a film career. He made his film debut in The Man in the Iron Mask in 1939 and initially experienced modest success in American films. However, after returning to England at the start of World War II, he encountered difficulties in maintaining consistent work despite roles such as Osric in Laurence Olivier's Hamlet. His career was revitalized through appearances in live television plays, which made him a recognizable figure in British television. Cushing gained renowned recognition for his work in horror films produced by Hammer Studio, notably for his performances as Baron Frankenstein in six of their seven Frankenstein films and as Doctor Van Helsing in five Dracula films. Throughout his time with Hammer, he often collaborated with Christopher Lee, forming one of the most notable acting partnerships in horror cinema. Beyond horror, Cushing played diverse roles including Dr. Who in the 1960s film adaptations and appeared as Sherlock Holmes in several productions. His role as Grand Moff Tarkin in the 1977 film Star Wars further established his international fame. Cushing continued acting into the early 1990s, also authoring two autobiographies, and is remembered for his contributions to horror, science fiction, and classic cinema.
