Robert Dean Stockwell was an American actor and collage artist with a career extending over seven decades. Initially engaged as a child actor under contract to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he appeared in numerous films during the 1940s and 1950s, including Anchors Aweigh, The Green Years, Gentleman's Agreement, and Kim. As a young adult, he starred on Broadway in the play Compulsion and its film adaptation, and in 1962 he played Edmund Tyrone in Long Day's Journey into Night, earning two Best Actor Awards at the Cannes Film Festival. His performance in the 1960 film version of Sons and Lovers earned him a Golden Globe nomination. Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Stockwell appeared in a variety of films, including The Dunwich Horror and The Werewolf of Washington, and supported roles in notable titles like Dune, Paris, Texas, Blue Velvet, and The Manchurian Candidate. He was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Married to the Mob. His television roles included characters on Quantum Leap, JAG, and Battlestar Galactica, which garnered him a dedicated following within science fiction communities. After his acting career, which concluded in 2015 due to health issues, Stockwell focused on sculpture and visual arts, demonstrating his talents beyond the screen.
