Nathan Fillion is a Canadian and American actor born on March 27, 1971. He is known for his leading roles in television series such as Captain Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds on Firefly and its film continuation Serenity, as well as Richard Castle on Castle. Since 2018, he has starred as Officer John Nolan on The Rookie, a role in which he also serves as an executive producer. Fillion has been involved in the production of the show's spin-offs including The Rookie: Feds and an upcoming series titled The Rookie: North. His acting career spans a diverse range of media, including films, television, theatre, and voice work. He has appeared in movies such as Slither and Trucker, and in internet-distributed productions like Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog and James Gunn's PG Porn. Additionally, Fillion's voice has been featured in animated series and video games including Bungie's Halo series, Destiny games, and the television series M.O.D.O.K. He initially gained recognition for his role as Joey Buchanan on the soap opera One Life to Live, which earned him a Daytime Emmy Award nomination, and also appeared in the sitcom Two Guys and a Girl as Johnny Donnelly. Fillion was awarded an honorary doctor of laws degree from Concordia University of Edmonton in 2025.
