Billy Bob Thornton, born August 4, 1955, is an American actor, filmmaker, screenwriter, and singer-songwriter. He gained international recognition for writing, directing, and starring in the independent film Sling Blade in 1996, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay and an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. He was also nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in A Simple Plan in 1998. Thornton has appeared in numerous films including One False Move, Tombstone, Dead Man, U Turn, Primary Colors, Armageddon, Monster's Ball, The Man Who Wasn't There, Intolerable Cruelty, Bad Santa, and Friday Night Lights. Additionally, he has written scripts for films such as A Family Thing and The Gift and directed movies like All the Pretty Horses, Daddy and Them, and Jayne Mansfield's Car. On television, Thornton has starred in series including Hearts Afire, Fargo, where he received an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe win, Goliath, which earned him another Golden Globe, and Landman, in which he plays the lead role. As a musician, he has released four solo albums and is the vocalist for the rock band the Boxmasters.
