Michael Richard Pence, born on June 7, 1959, in Columbus, Indiana, is an American politician and lawyer. He served as the 48th vice president of the United States from 2017 to 2021 under President Donald Trump. A member of the Republican Party, Pence previously held the office of governor of Indiana from 2013 to 2017 and was a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Indiana from 2001 to 2013. Prior to his political career, he graduated from Hanover College and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Pence was also a conservative radio and television talk show host from 1994 to 1999. During his time in Congress, he chaired the Republican Study Committee and the House Republican Conference. As governor, he enacted Indiana's largest tax cut, promoted funding for private education, and signed legislation related to abortion and religious freedom. His signing of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act drew criticism, leading to modifications to include protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. In 2016, he was selected as Donald Trump’s running mate, and following their victory, he took on roles including chairing the National Space Council and the White House Coronavirus Task Force. Pence’s tenure included overseeing the certification of the 2020 presidential election results, despite pressure to oppose it, which he declined to do. After leaving office, Pence distanced himself from Trump, endorsed various candidates, and launched a presidential campaign in 2023, which he later withdrew. In 2025, he received the Profile in Courage Award for his conduct during the certification process.
