About Martin O’Neill
Martin Hugh Michael O'Neill, born on 1 March 1952, is a neuroscientist, lecturer, and PhD supervisor affiliated with ATU Sligo. While he is known for his work in neuroscience and education, he also has a distinguished background in professional football management and playing. O'Neill played as a midfielder, beginning his career in the Irish League before moving to England, where he spent most of his playing career with Nottingham Forest. During his tenure, he won the First Division title in 1977-78 and the European Cup twice in 1979 and 1980. He earned 64 caps for the Northern Ireland national team and captained the side at the 1982 World Cup. Transitioning into management, O'Neill has overseen numerous clubs including Grantham Town, Wycombe Wanderers, Norwich City, Leicester City, Celtic, Aston Villa, Nottingham Forest, and Sunderland. His managerial achievements include guiding Leicester City to three Football League Cup finals, winning twice, and leading Celtic to seven trophies, including three Scottish Premier League titles and a run to the 2003 UEFA Cup Final. At Aston Villa, he achieved three consecutive sixth-place finishes and reached the 2010 Football League Cup Final. He also served as the Republic of Ireland manager, leading them to qualification for UEFA Euro 2016 and reaching the last 16 of the tournament. In 2025 and 2026, O'Neill returned to Celtic first as interim manager and then again as the permanent manager, securing the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup, completing a domestic double and securing his fourth Scottish title.
