Sir Mark Simon Cavendish, born on 21 May 1985, is a retired professional cyclist from the Isle of Man. He initially competed as a track cyclist, specializing in the madison, points race, and scratch race disciplines. Cavendish achieved notable success early in his career by winning gold medals in the madison at the 2005 and 2008 UCI Track Cycling World Championships riding for Great Britain, alongside Rob Hayles and Bradley Wiggins. He also secured a gold medal in the scratch race at the 2006 Commonwealth Games representing the Isle of Man. After not medaling at the 2008 Summer Olympics, Cavendish resumed track cycling in 2015, winning his third madison world championship title in 2016 with Wiggins and earning an individual silver medal in the omnium at the 2016 Summer Olympics. As a road cyclist, Cavendish turned professional in 2005 and quickly established himself as a top sprinter. Over his career spanning until 2024, he amassed 35 Tour de France stage victories, making him the recordholder and contributing to a total of 55 Grand Tour stage wins. He secured the men's road race at the 2011 Road World Championships and achieved points classifications in all three Grand Tours, including the Giro d'Italia, Vuelta a España, and Tour de France. Notably, Cavendish won the final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées in four consecutive years. His career faced challenges due to illness and crashes but he continued competing at a high level, returning to the Tour de France in 2021 and winning multiple stages. Cavendish has been recognized with honors such as being appointed MBE in 2011 and awarded a KBE in 2024 for services to cycling and charity work, along with various accolades including the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.
