Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci was an Italian polymath of the High Renaissance period known for his work in painting, drawing, engineering, science, sculpture, and architecture. He was educated in Florence under the tutelage of Andrea del Verrocchio and later spent significant time in Milan in the service of Ludovico Sforza. His artistic achievements include some of the most influential paintings in Western art, such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, which have left a lasting impact on cultural history. In addition to his artistic pursuits, Leonardo's notebooks contain detailed drawings and notes on a broad range of subjects, including anatomy, astronomy, botany, cartography, and palaeontology. His innovative thinking led to conceptual designs for flying machines, armoured vehicles, solar power, and other technological inventions, although many were not realized during his lifetime. Despite the limited number of his completed works, his influence as a painter and thinker remains profound. He made notable contributions to anatomy, civil engineering, hydrodynamics, geology, optics, and tribology, although his scientific discoveries did not lead to widespread publication or subsequent influence at the time. In his later years, he spent his final three years in France upon the invitation of Francis I, where he died in 1519. Recognized as a figure exemplifying Renaissance humanism, Leonardo's diverse achievements continue to inspire admiration and scholarly interest.
