Mahershala Ali is an American actor born Mahershalalhashbaz Gilmore on February 16, 1974. He earned an MFA degree from New York University and began his career as a regular on television series such as Crossing Jordan and Threat Matrix. His breakthrough role came with the science fiction series The 4400, where he played Richard Tyler. Ali's first major film role was in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, directed by David Fincher, in 2008. He gained wider recognition through supporting roles in the final two films of the original The Hunger Games series and in the television series House of Cards, which earned him his first Primetime Emmy Award nomination. Ali has received multiple accolades including two Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor, one for Moonlight in 2016 and another for Green Book in 2018. He was the first black actor to win two Oscars in the same category and the second to win multiple acting Oscars overall. Additionally, he won a Golden Globe Award, a British Academy Film Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award for executive producing We Are the Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest.
