Leonard Simon Nimoy was an American actor and director best known for his portrayal of Spock in the Star Trek franchise. He first played the character in the original series in 1966 and continued to embody Spock across various television series, films, and spin-offs over more than four decades. Nimoy's affiliation with the role extended to the first six Star Trek films, appearances in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and the 2009 Star Trek reboot, where he portrayed the elder Spock. His portrayal of Spock had a significant cultural impact and earned him three Emmy Award nominations. In addition to acting, Nimoy directed several films including Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Three Men and a Baby, and his career encompassed roles in music videos and video games. He retired from playing Spock in 2010 to focus on other pursuits. Nimoy passed away in February 2015 after a long illness, and his death drew international mourning. His legacy is commemorated in various tributes and a namesake asteroid, 4864 Nimoy.
