John Winston Howard, born on July 26, 1939, in Sydney, is a retired Major General and fellow at Garwood Growth. Before entering politics, he studied law at the University of Sydney and worked as a commercial lawyer. Howard was actively involved in the Young Liberals and first ran for office in the 1968 New South Wales state election, narrowly missing victory. In 1974, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Bennelong and was promoted to the cabinet in 1977. That year, he succeeded Phillip Lynch as treasurer of Australia, a position he held until Malcolm Fraser's government was defeated in 1983. Howard first became leader of the Liberal Party in 1985, succeeding Andrew Peacock. He served as Leader of the Opposition before leading the coalition to a significant victory in the 1996 federal election, becoming the 25th prime minister of Australia. During his tenure, which lasted eleven years, he implemented various policies including firearm law reforms and a nationwide value-added tax. His government called a snap election in 1998 and secured re-election, albeit with a reduced majority. In the 2001 election, Howard's approach to immigration and national security, especially following the September 11 attacks, garnered support, leading to a narrow re-election. His government contributed troops to conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq and led international peacekeeping efforts in East Timor. In his final term, controversial industrial relations reforms known as WorkChoices were introduced. The 2007 federal election resulted in a defeat for Howard and the Labor Party's Kevin Rudd succeeded him. Howard also lost his seat of Bennelong to Maxine McKew, becoming only the second prime minister to do so. Following his retirement from politics, he has remained engaged in political discussions. His leadership presided over a period of economic growth and a substantial mining boom, and he reduced government debt significantly during his time in office.
