Joaquin Rafael Phoenix, born on October 28, 1974, is an American actor known for his roles as dark, unconventional, and eccentric characters in independent films. He has received numerous awards including an Academy Award, an Actor Award, a BAFTA Award, a Grammy Award, a Volpi Cup, and two Golden Globes. Phoenix started his career in the early 1980s appearing in television series alongside his brother River. His first major film roles were in SpaceCamp in 1986 and Parenthood in 1989, during which he was credited as Leaf Phoenix, a name he later changed back to his birth name. He gained critical acclaim for supporting performances in films such as To Die For (1995) and Quills (2000). His portrayal of Commodus in Gladiator (2000) earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Phoenix also starred in horror films like Signs (2002) and The Village (2004), as well as the historical drama Hotel Rwanda (2004).
