About Jim Taylor

Jim Taylor was an American professional football player who played as a fullback in the National Football League for ten seasons. During his career, he was a member of the Green Bay Packers from 1958 to 1966 and the New Orleans Saints in 1967. With the Packers, Taylor participated in five consecutive Pro Bowls and contributed to winning four NFL championships, including victory in the first Super Bowl. He was named the NFL Most Valuable Player after winning the rushing title in 1962, surpassing Jim Brown. Known for his aggressive playing style and ability to withstand contact, Taylor developed a reputation for toughness and had notable rivalries, particularly with linebacker Sam Huff. As a college athlete, he played for the LSU Tigers, leading the Southeastern Conference in scoring in 1956 and 1957 and earning first-team All-America honors as a senior. Drafted by the Packers in the second round of the 1958 NFL draft, Taylor gradually became the team's all-purpose back, especially when short-yardage situations arose. His notable performance in the 1962 NFL Championship Game exemplified his mental and physical toughness. Over his career, he carried 1,941 times for 8,597 yards and scored 83 touchdowns. He was the first player to have five consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 rushing yards. Taylor's franchise records include 81 rushing touchdowns for the Packers and 8,207 rushing yards with the team. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1976 and is honored in the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame. His jersey number 31 is retired by the Saints.
