James P. Starlin, born on October 9, 1949, is an American comics artist and writer known for his work in the field of comic books. Starting his career in the early 1970s, he gained recognition for his space opera stories and for reimagining the Marvel Comics characters Captain Marvel and Adam Warlock. He is notably credited with creating or co-creating several significant Marvel characters including Thanos, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, and Shang-Chi. Starlin authored the miniseries The Infinity Gauntlet and its sequels, The Infinity War and The Infinity Crusade, which revolve around Thanos's quest for the Infinity Gems and his conflicts with Marvel Universe heroes.

In addition to his work with Marvel, Starlin has contributed extensively to DC Comics, illustrating numerous iconic characters such as Darkseid. He wrote the influential storyline A Death in the Family, which depicts the death of Jason Todd, the second Robin, during his tenure on Batman. He also created his own character, Dreadstar, for Epic Illustrated, demonstrating his versatility as both a writer and artist within the comics industry.
