Brian Michael Bendis is an American comic book writer and artist born on August 18, 1967. He began his career with crime and noir comics before transitioning to mainstream superhero work. During his time at Marvel Comics, Bendis collaborated with Bill Jemas and Mark Millar on Ultimate Spider-Man, the inaugural title of the Ultimate Marvel imprint launched in 2000. He is known for relaunching the Avengers franchise with the series New Avengers in 2004 and for writing several significant Marvel storylines including Avengers Disassembled, Secret War, House of M, Secret Invasion, Siege, and Age of Ultron. Bendis is also credited with co-creating notable characters such as Riri Williams, Miles Morales, and Jessica Jones. Throughout his career, he has received five Eisner Awards recognizing his work for both creator-owned projects and Marvel Comics titles. His writing influences extend beyond comics to include notable figures like David Mamet, Richard Price, and Aaron Sorkin, whose dialogue Bendis has praised. In addition to his work in comics, Bendis has contributed to television, video games, and film. He has also shared his expertise through teaching courses on graphic novels at The University of Oregon and Portland State University. In 2014, he published Words for Pictures: The Art and Business of Writing Comics and Graphic Novels, a book exploring the craft and industry of comics publishing.
