Jerry Alan West (May 28, 1938 – June 12, 2024) was an American basketball player and executive known for his significant contributions to the sport. He played professionally for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and is regarded as one of the greatest players of all time. West's playing career included numerous accolades; he was voted into the All-NBA First and Second Teams 12 times, elected to the NBA All-Star Team 14 times, and was named All-Star MVP in 1972. He played predominantly as a guard and participated in nine NBA Finals, winning one NBA championship in 1972. West holds the NBA record for the highest points per game average in a playoff series with 46.3. He was recognized for his clutch performances, including a notable buzzer-beating shot in the 1970 NBA Finals, and earned the unique distinction of being named Finals MVP despite his team losing in 1969. His impact extends beyond his playing career; he served as head coach of the Lakers for three years and later became their general manager, leading the team to six NBA championships. West also managed other teams, including the Memphis Grizzlies, where he contributed to their first playoff appearances and was awarded NBA Executive of the Year twice. His later work with the Golden State Warriors as a consultant helped secure two additional titles.
