Michael Jason Isbell, born on February 1, 1979, is an American singer-songwriter recognized as one of the most accomplished contemporary songwriters within his genre. His music is noted for its honest and emotional lyricism. Isbell's career began as a member of the band Drive-By Truckers, where he performed for six years from 2001 to 2007. His first album with his backing band, the 400 Unit, was released in 2009. In 2013, he achieved his solo commercial breakthrough with the album Southeastern, which debuted at number 23 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified gold. Southeastern included his signature song, Cover Me Up, which earned the Song of the Year award at the Americana Music Honors & Awards. In 2017, Isbell released The Nashville Sound, debuting at number four, featuring the Grammy-winning song If We Were Vampires. Throughout his career, Isbell has earned recognition from notable artists such as John Mayer, Bruce Springsteen, David Crosby, and Zach Bryan. He has received six Grammy Awards from ten nominations. In addition to his music career, Isbell has appeared in film and television, including roles in Squidbillies, Billions, Deadwood: The Movie, and Killers of the Flower Moon. His latest album with the 400 Unit, Weathervanes, was released in June 2023, and his most recent solo album, Foxes in the Snow, came out in March 2025.
